The first phase of my research was to locate a Ford Escape Hybrid to test. Sounds easy enough but turns out it was a difficult task as it is the top-selling compact SUV in Canada. Although there are about 5 Ford Dealerships near my residence I had to travel to another major city to locate one. So there I was finally staring at a black 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid 4WD. The look was pleasantly aggressive and I really like the front-end face-lifts that Ford has given to many of their vehicles. The roof rack was a nice extra to accommodate my kayak and the interior appeared roomy enough for all the gear that I would take along on my kayak adventures. Although the interior space would carry my gear it was not enough for my mountain bike, but that can be solved with the rook rack. I also don’t think I could sleep in the back but I guess I can invest in a better tent than my leaky one. So besides the bike and sleeping quarters, I was still impressed.

Let’s get back onto the Hybrid part of this machine. The dashboard was well laid out and the battery indicator was intriguing. I wanted to know where the 330-volt battery was stored and see it but the sales staff would not let me open the metal cover in the back. My question to the sales staff was how reliable is the battery? The sales staff assured me that it is very reliable and has an 8-year warranty.

Ok, so the Escape Hybird looks like a regular SUV and has a battery but how does it drive? When I started it I heard the typical 4-cylinder gas engine immediately. The sales person stated that the Hybrid had been idle for some time and therefore the batteries would require some charging before coming into use and would charge quickly with some driving. The way the battery is charged is it takes the energy created during breaking and is stores it in the battery. I was curious to see how long it would take for me to drive until the charge would be enough, so I ventured out onto the busy streets of Mississauga. At the 6-minute mark of driving time I was shocked at what happened next, while stopped at a red light the engine became so quiet that I was initially alarmed that the vehicle had shut off - great, stuck in a busy intersection! I began laughing as I pushed on the accelerator pedal (not the gas pedal) and the Ford Hybrid punched forward. It was in electric mode - amazing! Once I began accelerating, the engine went into gas mode again as the demand was too much for the battery and needed more charging. Given more time for the batteries to charge fully I would have had more electric driving.

During my short drive I experienced both electric and gas modes. I was very impressed with the performance while in electric mode. The sound and feel was similar to driving a golf cart (a much larger golf cart of course with more accessories). I also felt really good about being in electric mode as during that time I was not exhausting fuel and the truck’s emissions were practically non-existent.

I must conclude that the Ford Escape Hybrid is a must have for drivers who enjoy SUV’s. Like many of us who associated Hybrid with “small” now need to change our thoughts to “fuel efficient” and “functional”. Try a Hybrid, save money, and the environment.

Chrysler 2.99 Gas Promotion-Good or Bad

Chrysler, the world known American car manufacturer, has just launched its 2.99 gas promotion program in the United States. With this move, the company has started some very intense fighting between the supporters and the opponents of this idea.

The prices for oil have risen significantly over the past few years, putting much pressure on the economy and the people’s budgets. If the gas prices continue to revolve around the $3.60/gallon mark, people having large, thirsty V-8 cars will pay very much for their fuel.

To combat the rising of gas prices, Chrysler has launched its $2.99 gas guarantee program. In short, people that buy a car built by the Chrysler Corporation in a given period will only pay $2.99 per gallon at any gas station and the company will support the difference between $2.99 and the actual gas price.

6 Top Tips to Freshen Up a Motorhomes

As a first time motorhome owner, I brought a Renault Traffic Romance, that was over 20 years old, the engine was sound, the body work ropy and the inside musty, it was all I could afford. 1) Sort out leaks in the body work. In my van, I was dismayed to find mould growing behind where the table was stored, this had been scrubbed when I saw the van but came back quickly. The root cause was traced to a small rusty hole in the roof that let in a gradual drip. The metal was cut back beyond the rust and using a mesh underneath I built it back up and painted it.

2) Check the seals on the windows and the roof light. You can usually reseal the roof light with sealant, but if the window seals are perishing you may need to consider replacing these.

3) The obvious tip - wash everything you can in the washing machine. Take down all the curtains and put in the washing machine. Likewise for any cushion covers. Make sure these are completely dry before returning to the van.

4) Steam clean. I have a cheap steam cleaner that I brought many years ago, but you can hire one. As well as cleaning the carpets and fixed furnishings, you can also clean the cooker from decades of dirt and are great for killing of mould and moving dirt from corners. I even used it on the lino floor rather than scrubbing.

5) Empty and clean all the holding tanks.

What You Look For Before Buying Your Next SUV

Before you write down that check for the SUV you want to buy, it is best to get some education on the subject of rollover accidents. In fact, rollover accidents are a great concern to the National Highway and Transport Safety Agency (NHTSA), which is attached to the United States Department of Transportation.

Rollovers are accidents when a vehicles ends up on another side. And each vehicle class has a rollover rating from the NHTSA.

* Five stars - has a risk of rollover of less than 10%;

* Four stars - has a risk of rollover between 10% and 20%;

* Three stars - has a risk of rollover between 20% and 30%;

* Two stars - has a risk of rollover between 30% and 40% ; and

* One star - has a risk or rollover of over 40%.

It should not be surprising that sedans usually get a five or four star rating from the NHTSA, while taller vehicles like SUVs will likely get three stars or less. Minivans usually get a three-star rating.

The NHTSA ratings are based on "Static Stability Factor", which is essentially a measure of how top heavy a vehicle is. Essentially, taller vehicles, which have a higher center of gravity, have a greater chance to rollover.

Before rollover ratings were popularized by the NHTSA, driving experts rated the rollover resistance of a vehicle using the moose test. Under the moose test, a vehicle's stability is tested during a sudden evasive maneuver, usually towards the other lane (which is to avoid a moose suddenly appearing before your vehicle's path). The vehicles that were easier to control during the sudden lane changes rated higher in the tests.

Although the NHTSA ratings and moosetests would point to taller vehicles or those with a higher center of gravity being less resistant to a rollover accident, a lot still depends on the driver for safe motoring. In fact, the NHTSA once stated that all vehicles can rollover.

Since there is little motorists can do about the rollover ratings (since these are based on tests), what they can do is improve their skill and knowledge about vehicle control dynamics (a subject only taught in performance driving schools).

In the subject of vehicle control dynamics, a motorist is taught how to keep his vehicle balanced under all road conditions, and to avoid imbalance that could lead to loss of control or accidents (like a rollover).

To simplify matters (but we will write more on this subject later), a vehicle is balanced when its weight is equally distributed on all four wheels (when it is traveling), and there is no abrupt load transfer to the front (like during hard braking) or when the vehicle leans to one side (like what happens when a vehicle enters a turn too fast).

To keep a vehicle balanced, always observe the following:

* Travel at the appropriate speed so you can avoid the following:
Sudden lane changes (requiring quick steering inputs)
Sudden braking
* Always brake along a straight line (especially during hard braking situations)
* Brake early as possible (to avoid abrupt load transfer from the rear to the front of the vehicle)
* Always slow down and shift to the appropriate gear before entering a turn (do not step on the brakes and turn the steering wheel simultaneously)
* Be aware of road adhesion conditions (slippery and the like) and adjust speed appropriately
* Keep tires properly inflated at all times

It is also advisable to look as far as possible when driving (but not ignoring what is immediately ahead) so you can judge road conditions ahead and apply the necessary steering, braking or deceleration measure to keep your vehicle balanced.

Likewise, when a vehicle is to be loaded with lots of passengers and cargo, make sure this is well distributed over the vehicle. Do not load too much on one side, nor too much at the rear.

What we are saying here is the safety of a vehicle largely depends on driver skill, since it is a given that the most stupid driver on the road can rollover a vehicle that has a five-star rating from the NHTSA. Don't be one of them.
